Study Abroad by Victoria - March 2016 Scholarship Essay
Many people are afraid of college. Some choose to take a risk and come into contact with their wildest dreams. They do so by choosing to go study abroad. Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime experience, the student gets to earn their degree while exploring the world. In my opinion, I believe that studying abroad should be required to all college students.
While studying abroad, the students get to discover new traits they never knew they had. Living in a new environment causes the student to learn new adaptable skills. They learn new languages, and lifestyle, something that students who choose to stay home don’t come into contact with. Another benefit of studying abroad is students with study abroad experience are more likely to be hired over those who have not gone abroad. Employers love that students have taken the extra step to study in another country, learning a new language, culture, and way of life. This also helps the student find job prospects in other countries. At home, students may not have the chance to take many classes outside of their area of study, but studying abroad can present this type of opportunity. Studying a new subject or developing a new skill can be scary, but it builds character and makes students more willing to take on new challenges, a skill that is incredibly valuable in the workplace and in life.
In addition to more life experiences and job prospects, the student will also be able to taking more risky moves that are outside of their comfort level. Studying in a foreign country is not only something new and unknown to the human mind, it also opens the mind to find new opportunities. The student could have chosen a specific major and could realize they were made to be something else. This is something many people come in contact with. They are sure that what they major in is what they want to do but the come to the realization that their true passion was somewhere else. Going to study abroad extends the student’s view of the world, it allows the student to see what's best for them in the long run.
Choosing to require all college students to go study abroad is a positive move in the right direction. It will allow the students to come in contact with who they were really meant to be. They are not only in direct contact with the unknown but are also forced to succeed for themselves. This will allow them to adapt more easily to different situations, and actually be progressive in life. Overall, studying abroad is a one of a kind experience that everyone should experience.
