The Experience by Victor - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

I’ve never looked forward to anything more than college. Being independent instead of relying on my parents for everything seems enlightening. A new environment, with new surroundings, people, smells, and sounds will give me a new perspective on life. The wide perspective that I have so many options to choose from right in front of me. The world is an ice cream shop and boy are there plenty of toppings! Of all the toppings, one captures my attention more than all of them. People. So many people to meet and get to know. I’ve been connected with my friend group for so long that meeting new people will only aid in creating the new perspective.
My brother, Sam, has been in a fraternity for three years now and he does nothing but recommend them. He’s a member of the Delta Tau Delta family and says it was the greatest choice he ever made. He knows every single family member as well as he knows me, like a brother. He even refers to all of them as his brothers. The first time I met them it was nothing but, “Vic, meet my brother….and my other brother….and my brother from another mother….” You get the gist. Inside the house, every room is unique in its own way. Some rooms more bland than others but still comfortable. In some rooms, you’ll find gamers with their triple monitor battle stations. In other rooms, you’ll find writers writing, or singers singing. All of these men living in a house together, a real family where everyone is there for one another. Now, most people assume the worst once they hear the word, “fraternity,” but nobody can sit around thinking that the only thing these guys do in the house is party. All of them have a required six to seven hours of study time a day for five days, and must maintain a 3.5 GPA in order to remain a family member. Everyone does their part. “I don’t know what I would do without my brothers. I love every single one of them like my own,” my brother claims.
Of course, I don’t need to join a fraternity to meet people. A friend of mine goes to Colorado State and found a new group while touring the grounds on the first day of class. Now he’s in a Wolf Club where they groom and train wolves together. How awesome is that?! My vision for myself is to go somewhere far, somewhere where everything is unfamiliar. My island blood from my mother’s side has always made me fond of tropical climates, and I’ve always loved skateboards and surfboards of all different kinds. I can easily see myself taking on a business degree and finding a fraternity or group that favors boarding as much as I do. Either way, I want to meet a group of people that I can enjoy new and old things with, and will change my life for the better. I know that I’ll be thankful in the end, no matter what happens.
