Mr. Coutts by Victor - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
Mr. Coutts was my physics teacher my Junior year of high school. He was kind-hearted and you could tell he truly cared for his students. Mr. Coutts was always there an hour before school started and a couple hours after school ended to help his students. He only wanted the best from his students and was always checking on us to see how we were doing in our other classes. At the end of my Junior year he taught my class a very important lesson, "it's my job to inspire my students, but this year, you guys inspired me."
When Mr. Coutts told our class this, it got me to think what the student's job is. It's the teacher's job to make the students feel inspired, but the student's also need to make the teacher feel inspired. By paying attention to the teacher, you are getting inspired on what the teacher is saying. By paying attention to the teacher you start building a strong connection with them. By paying attention you are inspiring the teacher and making the teacher feel needed. This is what teachers want, to feel needed, to know what they are saying is getting across to the students. A teacher can only become better at teaching if his students inspire him to do so.
Mr. Coutts' words made me feel wanted and because of him I feel that I will have a better relationship with all my teachers. I truly believe that most teachers want the best for their students and that most students want to learn from their teachers. Due to this, I feel that I will do my best to make my teacher happy by paying attention. I want a great connection with my teachers and become close with them. I want to be one out of the many reasons on why they love their jobs. I want to inspire them.
Mr. Coutts' words inspired me to think about being a teacher as a profession. I want to inspire my students to become future leaders and make a difference in this world. I would love to make a connection with students and have a strong relationship with them. As a teacher, I would change my student's lives and inspire them, like all students should aspire to do. I want to make my students better people and get them excited to come to my class. Because of Mr. Coutts' words I now feel a profession like a teacher could make me happy. People have a reason for why they go to their job everyday, mine will be because of my students and the difference I wish to make in their lives.
In Mr. Coutts' class I learned many physics lessons, but none of them compare to his life lesson he taught us. It truly changed my life and my view on teachers. I know now that teachers only want the best for their students and truly care about their well being. Mr. Coutts changed my life with those words and possibly my plans for the future.
