A Dinner Date with Mr. Thoreau by Veronica - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

Assuming he would accept my humble invitation, I would kindly ask the company of a Mr. Henry David Thoreau, the son of a pencil maker, to dinner. Not by written word, but spoken, would I ask him to join me. Not for the next night, but that very evening. I would need to be as direct as possible if I were to ask him, as he would have to entertain the thought mildly before giving me a credible yes or no. I might have to cater to him, playing up the night as a wildly long discussion of rights and wrongs, the existentialism of nature, all fueled by good food by a fire on a wintry night in New England.
I would love to have a show and tell with the man. A modern conversation countered by dated values. To share what modern culture has adapted from his works, where we have diverged, and certain happenings which society is still gearing up to change.
I would express my personal views and how they similarly line up with his. That I take Nature as my God and the world as my church. How I can feel as if I am synonymous with other people and am dumbfounded when we can’t meet. Registering that the energy created by the sparking fire is the same bright, vivacious energy that can be found in my soul.
To explain my fears and inhibitions, ask what I am to do about the current tortures of the world, get a second opinion on the best way to help those who need it and in turn, how to help myself. Query as to how he got the ideas that he did, and what he felt he should do with them. How he weighed certain problems over others, speaking up for the most he can at a time - considering all their effects the same, considering all actions made against these wicked problems to be steps to fix the world.
It is to him I would most like to confide, connect, and express, as I feel as though he would encourage an opening of the soul over amicable dinner plans. I’d ask him how I could change the world by changing myself.
