Vanessa Goin' Crazy (within these 10 years) by Vanessa - March 2020 Scholarship Essay
With the numerous different major options in college, occupational therapy has always caught my attention. Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to do something in the medical field. Watching my mother help others and get a sense of fulfillment has honestly led me to want to go into this field. My mother has always pushed me to do my best in school and become a responsible young woman. My mother’s first occupation was as a travel nurse. Some days she would take me along when she traveled to help sick patients. These were the best days. Witnessing the joy she got from assisting her patients and the connections she made with them made me want to become an occupational therapist and help disabled, ill or injured patients regain and improve skills they need for life and work every day.
Hi, my name is Vanessa Uzuh. I live in Little Rock, Arkansas and I am a senior at Maumelle High School. I plan on attending the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. I am an easygoing, humorous person who enjoys watching movies and hanging with friends. I am heavily leading towards becoming an occupational therapist. I’ve known since I was young that I wanted to help others and spend time with people to attain their goals. I believe becoming an occupational therapist will help me make a difference, push me past my limits, impact human lives, and give me a sense of self-realization.
I have two main short-term goals I would like to reach during my path to become an occupational therapist. One short-term goal I have is to get a part-time job. My mother has already put two children through college so I plan to get a job, work hard, and save up money to help pay for my tuition. Another short term goal that is important to me is finding new outlets to express my creativity. In my free time, I plan to find new hobbies; for example, art is something I have always wanted to get better at. During my journey to becoming an occupational therapist, I would like to apply myself more to painting and digital art to help get rid of stress and relax my mind. Not only can achieving these short-term goals help get me through school easier, but it can also help me work diligently and improve my communication skills which is crucial when wanting to become an occupational therapist.
Along with a few short term goals, I also have two long term goals. One long term goal of mine is to maintain my grades throughout college and stay focused on my studies. Completing formal education is very important to me and I have always held a vision where education is my top priority. I plan to continue the drive I have to do great in school. My second long term goal is to make a difference in people’s lives and show more leadership. Becoming an occupational therapist is something I am truly passionate about and I aim to make a massive impact on those who are around me.
Joining a career in the medical field has been something I have been dedicated to since I was an adolescent. The more I research about becoming an occupational therapist, the more I fall in love with this career. In the end, what’s the point of living life without a career you're passionate about?
