If I Could Have Dinner With Barack Obama by Vanessa - October 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I could have dinner with any president, I would choose Barack Obama. Under his presidency DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) was repealed, allowing same sex marriage. Obama is the first president to support gay marriage. Even though I’m not part of the LGBT community, I do believe that love is love and there shouldn’t be restrictions. Another topic I support was stopping the deportation of approximately 4.7 million undocumented immigrants. Even though I’m Hispanic and all my family members are legal U.S. citizens, I know people who could’ve been personally affected by the deportations. Throughout his presidency, Obama stabilized the economy. Beforehand, I do believe our economy was on the edge of destruction. Obama also started the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), even though it has flaws, it has helped many people in need.
Of course, people make mistakes and Obama was no exception. During his presidency, the debt doubled from ten to twenty trillion. If I had dinner with him I would want to talk about the decisions he made and why. I’d ask him if there was anything he’d want to do differently. I’d ask if he had expected a different outcome as a result to some of the changes he made. My main question would be, if he was still our current president what would he do. Did he expect this outcome after our most recent election, what does he think of it? Overall, I would let him know how much I supported his decisions and what a great role model he is to us of color. Giving us inspiration to pursue our dreams.
