Who Is Our President by Vanessa - October 2017 Scholarship Essay

On June 15, 2015, America’s most controversial, and possibly the world’s most controversial, politician announced his candidacy for the United States 45th presidential position. America, the Democratic party, and even the candidate’s own Republican party were not expecting for him to cause much unity or chaos. In a matter of two years, he went from being Donald Trump, the leader of GOP polls, to Mr. Trump, the 45th president of the United States. Throughout the Presidential journey of Donald Trump, there were shocking endorsements and resisting protests. To some, his existence was the last thing they wanted and the foreshadowing of an ugly America. To others, his existence brought hope and flashbacks of the past American victorious moments. To me, curiosity crawled into my mind and thoughts. Curiosity caused me to wonder on how President Trump had coped with all that has happened during and after the election.
Whether someone is for the Democratic, a hardcore Republican voter in elections, anti-Trump, a “Make America Great Again” hat owner, baby boomer, millennial, pro-wall, an American citizen, or a third world country outsider, President Trump’s odyssey to the White House and victory has impacted or influenced their life. President Donald Trump is a President like no other, to both the people who see him as a positive diplomat or negative diplomat. If I ever had the privilege of ever sitting down with a former or current President, I’d hope and choose for the interesting President Donald Trump to be the one sitting right across from me for street tacos and an informal dinner.
Growing up, the 2016 election grabbed me by my legs, caused me to land on my knees, and worship politics. I have created strong thoughts and opinions on issues important to all political parties. Politics is my life and runs it. Many times, I found myself disagreeing with both leading nominees of the Democratic and Republican party. Although I found myself disagreeing more with our President Trump, I found a love for him. We both were different, yet we were so patriotic. I was against the wall, he was totally for it. I was more left and he was closely centered. I was more liberal and he was more conservative. We were American and we were proud. I wondered, “how could we be so different, yet so similar?” We wanted what was best for America. America was first for both of us. “But how could he think that way,” I found myself thinking in the middle of class lectures, sitting in church, and driving to my destinations. The news, media, and my American neighbors all had their own reason as to why Donald Trump thought the way he did. “He’s secretly a racist. He just loves the country. He cares for us. He is a bigot,” were what the press and citizens wrote on posts, articles, editorials, and tweets. The media swore they knew what made Donald Trump, Donald Trump. What was never truly given, was the chance for the nation to meet President Donald Trump for his true self.
Only a handful, such as close friends, family, and colleagues have had the privilege to get to know the current president of the United States and sit down for dinner. At any given day, I’d stop what I am doing, just to have dinner with President Trump and hear him talk for himself. I would love to have small talk over our opposing issues, future plans, current motions, and our love for America. I want to hear a side of him no one has ever heard. Everyone deserves a chance to be heard.
