The importance of being greater by vanessa - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
Growing up in a house of five and being the only girl in the family meant there was a lot of fighting and yelling day in and day out, it would have driven me insane if it weren’t for something that I could take out of my pockets and put in my ears and click play and allow the beautiful sounds of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's piano trio in e minor put me at ease. I never went through phases like most teenage girls it was a more subtle change in music taste. It has been more or less been one big phase of trying to find out what music inspired me to be happier and productive.
If I were to be a college professor it would be without a doubt in the band department because I would want to be someone that can connect with people from different origins going different places with equally different backgrounds. There is something absolutely captivating about seeing everyone coming together after being in school and focusing on working together to play a piece and just being able to relax because they know that they are in a safe environment where the only judging will be on skill level, which you can improve by practicing, rather than looks and popularity.
And yet even though I want students to have a place to express themselves musically I want to also challenge them to be the best even if it means including some friendly competition between each other because if you are not challenging yourself then you are not improving, you are simply existing. By challenging my students I would be influencing the way they react to situations in life because I believe that teachers really play a big part in the future of their students whether the student knows it or not.
Having the ambition to do something is what sets you apart from the rest, even though they tell us from a young age that we are a tiny speck on a tiny speck in an infinite amount of space and no one can seem to tell you for sure what the meaning of life is, by having ambition I give my life meaning and purpose as a music teacher I would be able to spread that thought the best because of the band students ability to see that every instrument adds to the piece as a whole and without the bass or the tuba we cannot convey the suspenseful moment in a piece or the resolution note at the end given by the clarinets it all works together and each individual voice counts and while you may not have a solo now, you can work hard and improve on your weaknesses because you too will have a chance at that solo.
