Title: Nurturing the Caregiver in Me: My Pursuit and Motivation in a Nursing Academic Career. by Valery - April 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Valery Sefer, a Middle Eastern and Hispanic aspiring nurse, preparing to embark on an exhilarating journey as a college freshman. My diverse ethnic background has fueled my desire to serve in a multicultural society and give back to the community by becoming a healthcare professional.
The inherent will to learn and grow beyond limits motivated me to pursue my chosen path in nursing. I have always believed that progress is the fuel that propels one towards the achievement of their heart's desires. This belief, coupled with my natural inclination towards caregiving, has guided me through my academic path. My interest in the medical field was piqued by my compassion for others and a desire to make a real difference in our healthcare system, particularly in improving patient care services.
A key tenant that keeps me focused on my academic aspirations is setting explicit goals. I am aware that the journey towards becoming a nurse is demanding; it not only requires perseverance but academic diligence as well. By setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals, I have managed to maintain a GPA of 3.2 despite the challenges posed by high school life. With this approach, I am confident that I will achieve success regardless of the rigor of the nursing program.
Creating a well-balanced schedule has also been instrumental in keeping me focused. By allocating specific times for study, leisure, and rest, I have crafted a routine that equally prioritizes my academic and personal wellness. Digging deeper into the realm of nursing, I have realized that this balance is crucial for a future caregiver. This routine allows me to fully dedicate my attention towards studies when needed and take necessary breaks to prevent burnout, ensuring I remain a consistent performer in my academics.
The Moroccan proverb asserts, "The hand of the diligent will rule," hence my third strategy to stay focused; organization. Keeping my space and studies organized have been pivotal to my progress, aiding me in maintaining my composure in challenging times. By neatly arranging my notes, scheduling my tasks, sticking to deadlines, and keeping my learning environment orderly, I installed a mindset of diligence and discipline, critical for a future nurse.
Last but not least, is the unwavering support I receive from my network of friends and family. Their belief in my potential gives me the courage to forge ahead even when the going gets tough. As emotional pillars, they play a significant role in pulling me through the stressful and strenuous times that come with the pursuit of academics.
As I seek to integrate into the esteemed nursing programs offered by SUNY College at Cortland, SUNY College at Plattsburgh, University of Rhode Island (URI), Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), Sacred Heart University, Molloy College, Adelphi University. I know that my motivation, goal-oriented mindset, organized approach, and healthy support system will be essential tools in acing my studies and ultimately becoming a compassionate, competent, and diligent nurse. I trust that the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship would propel me closer to my dreams and open a gateway to a successful career in nursing.
Conclusively, my love for learning, paired with my steadfast ambition, motivates me to risk the familiar and embrace the vulnerability that comes with growth. I am excited about the adventure that awaits me in college and wish to take full advantage of the opportunity to gain, grow, and give back to society through the noble profession of Nursing. I am Valery Sefer; Nursing, here I come!
