Navigating The Impact Of Spinal Harmony by Valery - December 2023 Scholarship Essay
Globally, there are only 103 thousand chiropractors for a current population of over 8 billion. Putting these numbers into perspective, there is one chiropractor for every 80 thousand people. The world is faced with a chronic shortage of chiropractors, resulting in large gaps of service providers for people with musculoskeletal conditions. My mission is to aid in bridging the gap between service providers and patients. My chosen major will benefit society by helping patients achieve improved health, improve their quality of life, relieve pain, and prime patients to function at their best potential daily.
In the United States, eight in every ten people experience back problems. According to Cross River Therapy, a research health clinic in New Jersey, 80 million workers claim to have back pain every year. Knowing these facts, I embarked on a volunteering journey where I would assist current chiropractic doctors in the field, setting up adjustment tables in low-income communities and third world countries. Through my volunteer work, I have had the privilege of assisting doctors in facilitating treatment. Being able to work closely with patients and their families has helped me become knowledgeable in treating different types of injuries, the importance of communication skills, and patient care. Helping improve their ability to complete simple tasks such as standing up straight, picking up their children again, climb the steps of their home, and being able to exercise comfortably has been some of our patient’s accomplishments. Seeing people enjoy the little things in life by helping restore physical harmony motivates me to continue this impactful journey.
Being a doctor who helps people overcome their limitations and enhance their quality of daily experiences, serves as a powerful contribution to society. Healthiness is essentially a form of human capital, where poor health impacts general societal progress. Facilitating preventative measures, chiropractors reduce the burden on the healthcare system. We can prevent health issues before they become chronic or severe. Collaborating with other healthcare professionals, considering both traditional and alternative approaches to healing, chiropractors create a well-rounded, patient centered healthcare approach.
