A Role Reversal by Valentino - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
Throughout the education career of many students, I can't help but think about how I would run the classroom. What would I do different and what would I want to teach? With a large variety of classes to choose from upon entering high school, the request to select only one can prove to be a time consuming task for most. However, that is not the case with me. If the roles were reversed and I was able to teach a class, I would choose History with not hint of hesitation. I would choose to teach History because of my interest in it, my understanding of the subject, and due to how I have seen History classed being conducted.
From an early age, I have always had an interest in History. My first major exposure to the subject was a fifth grade class focusing on the birth of the United States. I can vividly remember participating in a play put on by the students regarding George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River. For the remainder of the school year, my interest in History grew as I learned more about it. I was constantly asking questions about battle tactics, and the daily lives of people in the time period. Ever since, History has been a large part of my life from the television that I decide to watch, to the classes that I decide to take. Due to my large interest in the subject, I would choose to teach History.
I consider myself very lucky that school comes easy to me. Even classes that I don't necessarily enjoy, such as math, just seem to click with me. However, my ease in education along with my interest in History have formed a deeper understanding of the subject. I do not wish to complete my understanding of History anytime soon, so I would teach it to go even further in my understanding of the subject. Along with this, my love for the subject would very likely result in students learning the subject better as I would find ways to get them interested as well. The current understanding of History and desire for more convince me that History would be the best subject for me to teach.
My first History class in high school, World Studies, has been my favorite class in my entire education career. Along with the enjoyable curriculum, the teacher did everything he could to make the class fun, and I admire that to this day. I don't have so much as a negative memory from World Studies. The way the class was conducted was very enjoyable for both the teacher and students and that is an environment that I would thrive in teaching. My personal experience with history classes makes the choice obvious for what class I wound want to teach.
After several years of exposure to history, my interest in it, and understanding of it make me want to choose to teach history in a situation of role reversal. Some of my favorite memories in school have to do with history, whether its the actual class or simply watching a documentary. Despite the amount of subjects that I enjoy, history stands out above the rest. All of the aspects of it interest me making it a prime choice in the selection. Being that there is so much more that I can learn about it would make me choose history as the academic subject I would teach if the roles were reversed.
