The Hours of Productivity by Vadim - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

It is not a difficult task to determine which hours of the day I am most productive and efficient. I once read the following; “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise” (Benjamin Franklin) it has been my motto ever since.

During my studies in nursing school, I discovered that I am certainly a morning person. I enjoy waking up early while most people are still asleep. After a good nights sleep my mind is clear and refreshed. I take my time to relax, meditate and listen to some music. After I have breakfast I am ready to sit down and conquer my goals for the day. Working early in the morning I am much more focused and have a longer attention span. My mind is clear and I am not fighting feelings of exhaustion, which would be the case if I were to be working into the night. Being a morning person has not only increased my level of productivity during the morning hours but throughout the entire day. I found that setting goals and accomplishing simple tasks early in the morning provides an increase in confidence and energy for the rest of the day.

On the contrary, when I try to work at night my productivity wanes. I can spend several hours trying to study or write a paper but not get anywhere. My mind wanders and thoughts swing from one thing to the next. Simultaneously I am fighting my bodies demand to sleep. As the night presses on and I have not had much progress my anxiety beings to swell. I begin to look at the approaching deadline and realize how little time I have left. Seeing how working late into the night negatively affects my productivity and also my personal mental, emotional and physical health, I determined that I am most definitely a morning person.

I believe that being a morning person or a night owl is based on daily habits. Some people over time have learned how to be productive during the nighttime while others follow a more natural routine of working with the sun and resting under the moonlight. For myself, it was ever so clear that I am a morning person and during those hours I am most productive.
