Freshman Freedom by Tyrica - March 2019 Scholarship Essay

One piece of advice I would give to the incoming freshman class is simply to enjoy themselves. As a senior, I have taken many moments to look back on the past three years of my high school education and have found one thing that I wished that I did more which was going out with my friends and enjoy myself. As you progress in high school, it is quite easy to get caught up in the workload and outside activities that you are involved in. Although it is great to be active and perform well in school, it is equally important to take a step back and do something for you. Freshman year was one the most laid back year and we had plenty of time to explore the world around us. That is something that I wish I could say I had during sophomore, junior, and senior year but it is not. I, like many, became focused on ensuring that I had all of my community service hours, practiced my instruments and many other tasks that would help contribute to my success in the future. Now although I did take breaks and enjoy time with my family and friends, it was not as much as I wanted. Now, as a senior, I have ensured that I make up for the lost time. I met many new people and have grown closer to my friends.

Freshman year at my school is a great time to take the chance to get to know the people around you further and begin to make bonds that could last a lifetime. There is a lot of freedom as you are starting your high school career and can begin to pick what path you want to take in order to set yourself up for graduation and your future. It also is a time where you have more freedoms and can venture beyond the walls of high school and out into the world on various programs. As a freshman, everything is open to you can you have control of what you want to do and how you want to do it as long as it falls within the guidelines of our policies. Once again, looking back, and looking at the freshman now, I have seen a change in how the students hold themselves. They make plans together, they act, they enjoy themselves and it is a beautiful thing. Freshman year is one of the best years at my school and I hope that they take full advantage of the school's resources while also enjoying the time that they have together because the time does fly by regardless of how slow it seems in the beginning. I would say to the incoming freshman class at Washington Latin Public Charter School, “enjoy yourselves and enjoy the time that you have together. Freshman year is like a get out of jail free card. If you do not like something you can move on without repercussions . Consequently, take this time to learn, explore, and simply enjoy yourselves.”
