New York by Tylisha - April 2016 Scholarship Essay

If there was such an invention as a time machine, I would jump aboard and go four years into the past to warn my younger self: do not be afraid of your teachers. I would explain that, they are there to help you and many struggles could be avoided later on in your academic career just with a simple conversation. The one piece of advice that I have to offer to younger students, which not only pertains to high school but beyond, is that teachers are some of the best friends they could ever have. Most are just waiting for students to come to them.
I am naturally a quiet, shy person. I was reluctant to ask questions in class in fear of appearing dumb and when I did not understand something, instead of seeking help, I would just take the bad grade. It was not until my junior year that I realized this tactic would only promote failure. This was the year that really mattered for my future college aspirations and I could not afford to get bad grades. In addition, my classes were tremendously harder. One such class was Calculus. Math was usually my strong suit and I was disappointed when Calculus did not come follow the status quo. So with a heavy heart, I fearfully dragged myself to my calculus teacher’s room and begged for his help. That was probably one of the best decisions of my life. Not only did I grasp a better understanding of the topic but I also formed a relationship with Mr. Joles (my Calculus teacher). Now, as my calculus II teacher, he is just as understanding and helpful. I am not fearful of raising my hand in class or asking for clarification. I am also not afraid of his judgement anymore because the realization that his main concern is my mastery of calculus and not about if I am too unintelligent.
“Asking for help does not mean that we are weak or incompetent. It usually indicates an advanced level of honesty and intelligence.” –Anne Wilson Schaef
Asking for help is not admitting defeat. Britain was not defeated by one timid warrior. It was taken down by an army of resilient, brave soldiers. Receiving help from the experts is adding another solider to one’s side. Teacher are hired, so that students can learn. They are not there to point anyone out as the dumbest person in the room. They want to help, but as a young adult, the student has to be the one to initiate the contact. Teachers have hundreds of students and they are simply unable to track down all the students who are not doing well. If one cares about their education, then he will go the extra mile and seek help. I learned a little late, and suffered from anxiety and stress because I was too nervous to get the help and advice from my teachers. Now as a senior in the National Honor Society, I understand the incredible resource that teachers are and I use them daily. Teachers are crucial to a successful high school career. Do not let parent’s tax dollars go to waste, get help when necessary.
