Finding a Career in Your Passion by Tyler - February 2019 Scholarship Essay
As a child, I was very ambitious. I constantly had an idea or project that I would set my mind to for a while and then eventually move on to my next phase. Most of the interests in my life have been just that—phases. Very few things have ever stuck with me for longer than a few months to a year. My love and passion for music has, however, stood the test of time. For as long as I can remember, it has been my one true devotion. I have appreciated and created music for my entire life; still I know I have not found my true calling within music. I love performing with all my heart, but I know it is my purpose to teach.
Musica Animam Tangens is the title of my favorite choral piece. It translates from latin to ‘music touches the soul’. This quote has resonated with me for so long, and remains one of my most basic principles in life. Music is one of the few things in this world that can reach inside someone and actually transform them. It can instill any conceivable emotion in even the darkest of hearts. In my personal experience, music has brought me to my closest of friends, it has given me the resources to feel the full breadth of my emotions. To my knowledge, there is not a single object, idea, or phenomenon that could even come close to the power of music. I cannot fathom an argument doubting its limitless capabilities. I look forward to the rest of my life, and the time left I have to share the power of music with everyone who will let me. However, I will not do it selfishly, and I will not do it alone.
It is very apparent that my love for music is rooted deeply in me and has helped shape me into the person I am today. I take pride in the transformations I’ve made just in the past few years. This love and this passion deserves to be shared. I want nothing more than to inspire young students to feel this passionately about what they believe in. I do not want to become a music educator to teach students how to learn solfege or the proper singing posture. I want to be a music educator so that I may light a fire underneath kids and ignite their deepest passion. In return, I hope that one day many of my students will go on and inspire children like them to find a passion for what they believe in. I know how important it is for every individual to find their one true passion, because I understand that to find that passion is to discover part of who you are. I will consider myself successful when I know in my heart that I did everything I could do to instill that fervor in kids who were just like me.
My one true aspiration is without a doubt to one day teach kids how to fall in love with something they truly believe in. My only hope is that they will take that knowledge and run with it, leaving my classroom on their way to pursuing what they care most about in this world. Because of these dreams which I believe in all my heart, I have irrefutable faith that if we as humans teach others to seek out their passions, and we actually do so, we will find peace and love for one another and ourselves.
