Biology: the Study of Life by Tyler - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
Life, starting for one single-celled organism and evolving into the animal kingdom and plant life around the globe. If the roles were reversed I would teach Biology. The reasons I would teach Biology is because I am fascinated by the subject, also I believe that people have a greater understanding of the world with studying basic biology, and people can gain critical thinking skills by learning and participating in science.
Ever since I was young I have been fascinated by the world around me and how it works. When I was younger I would spend the whole day trying to figure out why certain aspects of the world work a certain way, I didn't know it at the time but I was preform unorganized and very lousy experiments. As I've grown older I have always had a huge interest in my science class and I spend most my time hunting and fishing so I've naturally grown into an interest of science and life, especially wildlife. So I have found myself very interest in Biology and that is why it is the subject I would teach.
Through taking Biology myself I have come to find myself understand more about the world and just how amazing it is to be alive. This is an experience I would like to pass on to others. I also came to respect the insects and wildlife more because I now have a greater understanding of their purpose on Earth and the roles they serve in their ecosystem. This is important to pass on to other people.
Critical thinking is a very important skill for people to have and to be able to use in day to day life, in any science class people learn how to develop and use their critical thinking skills they will need in their future. Science is the most self-taught subject, as most of science is doing experiments to answer a question and if that answer was just told to the person they would not fully understand the why behind the answer. So students develop their critical thinking skills to design an experiment that answers a question as well as use critical thinking to solve problems that arise during their experiments.
If I could reverse the roles I would teach Biology to give students a better understanding and to give people more respect of life and how it works, as well as developing their critical thinking skills that they will need no matter what that students future holds for them. Sciences are the whys behind the world and everyone should have a basic understanding of those whys. I would also teach biology because I am very interested in the subject and plan to become a Wildlife Biologist in my future. Biology is the study of life and people should know the basics of the functions each type of life serves in their respective ecosystems and how nature is a beautiful harmony of life supporting each other.
