Tyler Ferrara by Tyler - December 2013 Scholarship Essay
The summer of my junior year was the best summer I’ve ever had. That summer I was hired as a junior counselor for the town of Stratford’s playground camp. This meant that I had to grow up and take on much more responsibility. The one thing that I wanted to accomplish that summer was to gain the respect of a superior. Achieve a position as a leader.
When the season began I was nervous to say the least. What what I would do with 60 kids calling my name at one time and pulling me in all different directions. Most of them were under the age of 10. But as the summer progressed, I was able to get a handle on the situation. The kids were listening and gained respect for me as their leader. My confidence grew daily.
Next thing I knew, it was the middle of July and the summer was almost over. I’d been working at the beach all summer and that day had to be the hottest day so far that summer. As I watched the kids playing on the playground I noticed that dark clouds were approaching the shore but I didn’t think much about it. With the sun still shining brightly, it started to rain. Soon after it started raining, the dark clouds enveloped the beach and it started to pour. Rain drops like pitchers and thunder and lighting. As lighting and thunder cracked through the sky, I had to make a quick decision as to where to go to keep these kids safe from the weather. I decided that we would take cover under a pavilion. If it wasn’t for I loved that feeling of trust and respect. My experiences working with these kids have given me a goal and a direction. My experiences as a counselor have proven to me that I the ability to make decisions quickly and to lead. I know that I can use what I have and what I have learned to pursue a career in elementary education. Thank you for your time and consideration.
my ability to have the kids listen to me I wouldn’t have been able to get everyone to safety quickly and efficiently. I could clearly see in this moment of adversity that the kids looked up to me as an adult and trusted me. Not to sound cliché, but together we weathered the storm.
