Half-Way Around the World in Less than a Day by Trystan - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

I wake up early in the morning. I eat my breakfast and drink my coffee. I start my car and commence my drive to the university. I search through the crowd of SUV’s, sedans, and hatchbacks to find my assigned parking spot. I walk across campus to my lecture hall that I’ve come to see so often. I set up my desk and write all my equations and theories on the chalkboard. Now I wait. I wait for students to rush through those two, open, push-bar doors and sit down. As soon as they sit, their minds are at my will. They trust me with their grades, future, and most important to them their tuition. They trust that I will give them correct and honest information to the best of my ability. I often think of this situation. What would I be like as a teacher or college professor? It’s always been my belief that a teacher is really good and loves their job if they teach a passion of theirs. For me, that passion has always been aviation. I’ve always had the itch to try and teach others about what makes a plane fly to correct methods of landing an aircraft and all of the interesting information in between.
When I was just seven years old, I got my first taste of aviation. My family had taken me on a trip to Tampa, Florida and I was lucky enough to go in the cockpit of the plane we were on. I was instantly hooked. As soon as that vacation ended, I went home and bought my very own flight simulator. That’s when I started my studies. From there on, it escalated. I eventually started flight lessons at my local airport. I even attended an aviation camp, where I won two-hundred dollars for being the most motivated camper there.
I’ve always had the urge to relay all my knowledge to my friends around me. Whether they wanted to hear it or not. I thought that the world of aviation was such a captivating lifestyle. Within a hundred years since the creation of flight, we were able to fly around the world on jets. I think that’s incredible. That’s why I’ve always felt like aviation should be spoken about and taught about more than it is now. I feel like I could always be that bridge to get people interested in aviation. Not only do I love aviation, but I also consider myself a people person and able to connect with them easily. This connection could help make hard aviation concepts easy to learn and understand.
If I could pick any type of subject to teach, I would choose to teach aviation. Aviation is in my blood. I focus my life around it, and I believe I have a very good understanding of it. Tying this in with my personal attributes of being a people person, I could not only make aviation fun to learn, but easy to understand. People or students would leave my class knowing more than they thought they would. I believe aviation should be taught and talked about more in our education system. It’s what helps connect the world with each other. It helps get us around the world in half of a day. Without it, ideas and relationships would certainly take longer spread. Going back to my first belief about teacher; a good teacher is one that loves what he or she teachers. I believe that would make me a good teacher, at any grade level, because I certainly would love what I was teaching.
