Soccer is my Motivation by Triumph - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

My desire to reach my goals are so strong that I keep it written in my room to see every day. I have plans to attend college to obtain a Psychology degree while playing soccer at the collegiate level.

My passion for soccer began eight years ago in an empty field near our house. Immediately I was intrigued chasing a soccer ball around on an uneven dirt field with portable goals. Soon after, I discovered soccer legends like Neymar and Ronaldinho on the internet. In awe of Ronaldinho´s soccer tricks, I was inspired to learn some myself. I was inseparable from my soccer ball. My mom would joke that she knew when I was about to enter the living room because a soccer ball would precede me every time. Other telltale signs that I had been practicing in the room were broken picture frames on the floor. I am pretty sure I broke every picture frame in our house at one point in my soccer career. I found that all this practice paid off. I was able to learn how to do ¨around the world¨ as well as double ¨around the world¨ with both my right and left foot. I still can out juggle all my teammates and even my coaches. At one point my juggle count without dropping the ball was around 2,000 touches. Soccer has impacted every part of my life. It has taught me discipline, teamwork, communication, confidence, compassion, and good sportsmanship.

Psychology is an important part of life which tends to be overlooked and underestimated. I believe mental health is just as important as physical health. My plan is to use my psychology degree to become a sports psychologist. Understanding the mind is critical to living a good life. I want to help the next generation succeed both physically in sports and mentally.
