Maths a Struggle by Tristan - April 2019 Scholarship Essay
Math has always been a struggle for me since elementary school. every day I would come home and sit at the table and cry about how hard it was and how numbers made no sense to me. When I started high school I knew the math would be my biggest struggle. Turns out Geometry is the only kind of math I understand.
I managed to get past the last 3 years of math with some extra help here and there but my senior year math class was a rollercoaster I wanted to get off of. There were some good tests and some bad but in the end, my grade was just passing enough for the credit, except for one competency, my final grade showed a 73 which is passing but that one section had a 65% in it which was not. Now I learn best in a classroom setting, not on a computer, my teacher gave me a course to take online to make up my grade. From the beginning, I did not think this was a good idea but I decided to give it a shot. Not realizing that if I didn't understand it in the classroom how I would on a computer.
I tried it out and did not do so great. I ended up not getting the credit for that class even though I passed overall I just didn't pass a competency. This made me ineligible for my last Season of track and a very slim chance of getting into a four-year college even though this was the one and only class I have ever failed. It was very disappointing being told that I wasn't going to get into a four-year college. I was able to become a manager/coach on the track team and be involved with the team. About three weeks ago I got a letter in the mail stating that I was accepted into Keene State College In the Phycology program. I plan on attending there in the fall. It makes me extremely happy that even though math has been a struggle for me for basically my entire life that it didn't stop me from getting into college and being a part of a team. In a way, it has made me learn from my mistakes and work harder in all of my classes and not slack off.
