Escaping the Broken Record by Trinity - February 2019 Scholarship Essay

The dream I have for my future runs parallel to one of my biggest fears. My fear is getting stuck in a job that makes my life feel like a broken record. When I am in the workforce I want a job that doesn’t feel like a chore. I want a job that I am excited to get up and go to everyday. This is why I believe my dream job will be obtained by majoring in history.
I already love reading documents and learning how they connect to different events that have changed the world. I enjoy learning about the people who wrote those documents and how different things in their lives lead them to be world changers. When you already have a passion for doing something, it becomes easier to do and spend time on.
When people think back on how they were taught history a common teaching practice was reading page after page of a textbook. Perhaps, they sat through long-winded lectures that put them to sleep. Or maybe even both. Oftentimes this leads to thinking that history is irrelevant. You start to think it is only facts about times, events and people who do not affect modern life. When taught like that, it's no wonder history class is just a synonym for nap time. But what if that could change?
What if history was actually more than just words in a book and a class you drag yourself to? What if history became a fun story hour instead? For example, did you know The New York Post was created by Alexander Hamilton so he could talk poorly about his political rivals because he was upset with the election results? Or how about a time when the Catholic Church elected two popes and almost destroyed the church, a time referred to as the Western Schism? So often teachers leave out all the fun details and end up with a mound of boring instruction. I would like to change that.
I was blessed with a great history teacher. My dream is to show others history the way I was taught. History is full of ups, downs, and sideways quirks. I would like to share those stories in a way that sparks others to be interested in history and helps them remember the past. History isn't always boring and useless, people just edit too much out sometimes.
