A University Worth Fighting For by Trinity - July 2018 Scholarship Essay
The word president calls to mind leadership, ability, and integrity. It outlines an individual so dedicated to the land they are leading that they wish to improve it further. Patriotism lives in the hearts of every individual- whether it is for their country, their state, their community, or their world. President John Adams said, "To be good, and to do good, is all we have to do."
I am attending the University of Tennessee in the fall as a first-time freshman. Since I have not attended the school before, I cannot say what I would do to improve the University because I have yet to find something necessary of improvement. I can, however, say that, if I were to run for student body president, I would want to inspire the presidents that came after me. I would wish to amend that which my fellow classmates felt necessary of amending and accept with an open mind the ideas that were sent my way. I would hope to be a president worthy of students' votes; a president that makes others think, "I could do that." My aspirations as president would include being someone students and teachers felt they could speak to freely. I would hope to improve the university to the effect that people felt my reign was not wasted.
There is always room for improvement. President William Henry Harrison said, "Times change, and we change with them." No country, community, or school is perfect. There is no president, mayor, or dean that does not wish to see change. "Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert" Isaiah 43:9 KJV. Even the Lord sees fit for change, and we are, in fact, one nation under God.
I already love the University of Tennessee. I am in love with the passion the professors have already demonstrated, the school spirit that surrounds the school, the intelligent and friendly conversations that can be had with any given student, and the beautiful campus. If I were student body president, I would wish to do the university that I love justice.
