The Importance of Stories by Trilby - June 2014 Scholarship Essay
What makes a good book, great? Is it the knowledge it imparts upon you? Is it plot? Is it the characters? Is it the lessons it teaches? Is it the way the story never gets old even though your mom read it to you, and you have read it to your children countless times? Or is it the the familiarity of it that makes it special?-- How you feel as if the characters are real while you hold the book in your hands, as you caress the worn spine and the well-loved cover. To me, these are the most important parts of a book. A book should teach you something new every time it is read, and it should leave you bereft when it is finally over with the only comfort that it will always be there, just as exciting, when you pick it up again.
So, if I were to write a book, I would write of far off lands and daring adventures that would sweep the reader off their feet and carry them away into a fairytale. These types of books are especially important to young readers in today's society because it is to easy to get stuck in the traditional world-view of how they should act. We must teach our children that it is never to late to dream, and it is never useless to imagine. Because of books of daring heroes and heroines, young readers grow up believing that anything is possible and will later be less hesitant to dream bigger and more likely to make their dreams come true. The characters in these stories will become role models to the children and teach them the important lessons in life. Although they may not be entirely realistic, the thing they teach young readers will stay with them throughout their life; and I believe that everyone should be able to live their own fairytale.
