Life by Trey - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
My name is Trey Fredman Steve Everett. I am an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes.I am an Arikira. This year I reside on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. However, I was raised on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation prior to this year. I moved to get to know my biological father.
The truth of it is that I broke up with my girl friend after 3 years. Also I didn't like my step-father. I felt like my world was falling apart. I was going to be a senior and football practice started. I attended practice daily, but my heart wasn't into it. I told my mother I hated my life. I wanted so badly to live with my father. My mother had a very difficult decision, she wanted me to stay at home, but she couldn't stand me being so unhappy. Therefore she allowed me to move.
I get lonely at times, but I can always call home. My mother travels to all my sporting events. Which is 2 hours from her home. So I do get to see her and my brother often.
Enrolling in a new school was difficult. For the first semester I had to drive 1.5 hours to school daily. My father was building a new house in the White Shield, ND and he wanted me to attend that school from the start. Today we are in the new house and my commute to school is 1/2 hour long.
I feel like I've found my belonging. I am have family that I never knew. I am learning about my heritage and to speak my native language.
Sports have been an amazing part of my life in my new situation. I excelled in football and now basketball. I have great academic grades and feel like "Life" has given me what I needed to become a whole person.
I look forward to my next chapter in my "Life." Attending college is the next stepping stone in exploring who I am and who I want to become. I've watched my mother attend college throughout life for her Masters.
My sisters have both graduated college and have good jobs. My father and step father have Bachelor's. So now my "Life" is taking me down the same path. I want to attend college because I want to have a good "Life".
