Dinner with Thomas Edison by Trevor - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

There are so many influential people that I would consider having dinner with because I have a lot of questions for a lot of people from the past. It is hard to narrow it down to just one person, but if I had to choose just one historical figure to have dinner with, it would be Thomas Edison. To me, there are few people who were able to accomplish the remarkable feats that Edison did. I would want to have dinner with him for a number of reasons.
The very first reason that I would want to have dinner and converse with Thomas Edison, is because of his great business success and prowess. Edison was an extremely successful inventor and businessman. I am planning on pursuing a career in business, so I would love advice from someone who had as much success as Edison. I would want to ask him about how he got started, goals he set for himself, how he was able to push through issues that arose, and what he did to make sure he always had the drive to keep going.
Another reason for choosing Thomas Edison as my dinner partner, would be to discuss his creative thought process. I have always been fascinated with the fact that a man could come up with over a thousand ideas for patents. I consider myself a creative person, so I would very much like to share creative thoughts with Edison. Getting a look inside his head to see what he was like would be very interesting and I believe beneficial to me and my goals.
The third reason for choosing Edison is my biggest reason. I would want to know how his relationship with Henry Ford impacted him and helped him achieve his goals. Edison and Ford were close friend and very influential people for their time. I think that it would be very interesting to learn more about the things that the collaborated on. One of the things they both advocated for that I find very interesting, is their push for monetary reform. They wanted money to be commodity backed rather than backed by gold. I want to know more about their ideas and would love to discuss it with Edison over dinner.
Thomas Edison was a remarkable man who accomplished a lot of very important things during his time on Earth. Being able to have a face to face conversation with a man that was this influential would be an opportunity that I would be very excited and privileged to have. There would be so much I could learn in just a short period of time, but it would be information that I could pass on and use throughout my whole life. That is why I would pick Thomas Edison over any other historical figure to have dinner with.
