What does college mean to me? To me college is where your true future begins. Every high school students biggest excitement and fear is college, from “will they get accepted to the school of their dreams” to “will they have and make lifetime experiences at college”. For example, the fear I’m having right now just writing this essay thinking to myself, where will I be once I walk off that stage with my diploma on June third 2016. Looking back on my past four years of school, I’m just fortunate I became involved in my school beginning in my freshman year when I applied to be apart of in student government.
Student government has changed my entire high school experience and I can honestly say I wouldn’t know who I would be right now if I hadn’t been a freshman class representative my freshman year. I will never forget my first student government meeting my when I made my first friends who were in higher grade levels than me, and it turns out they were swimmers who got me to join the school swim team. I received two varsity letters my freshman and sophomore year, for swimming and diving. Towards the end of my sophomore year, I decided to run for student government historian. I knew taking on such an important position and task like this, I would have to leave swim team. At the end of my sophomore school year I found out I won the election and my campaigning paid off. My junior year I was officially a student government officer and not only did I have to worry about myself I also had to worry about an lead my fellow student government members. Going to different leadership camps an conferences I decided to run again for office at the end of my junior year but this time I was running for vice president. Again, I had run an excellent campaign and I won over the votes of the student body. So this year as my senior year I have so much responsibility and dedication to my school to make sure palmetto ridge high school makes its mark on the map and that are student body has incredible school spirit.
Secondly, throughout these past four years of high school I have been very dedicated to assisting the community as much as a could. For four summers in a row I volunteered as a camp counselor and I have accumulated 417 community service hours for my work. The camp that I worked at specialized in the help of special needs children so me being able to see these children smile makes a real difference in my life knowing I could put a smile on their face. Another community service event I volunteered for was my local fairgrounds. My organization was called the junior fairgrounds, we basically are the right hand man on every event, we set up for the events held at the fairgrounds, one of my favorite events we do is towards Halloween called the “gross” walk which is a haunted walk for a woman named Cheryl Gross, hence the name “Gross walk”, passed away from lung cancer , but while she was battling lung cancer all proceeds from this event would go to her hospital bills, unfortunately she’s not with us anymore so now half of the funds made from the event go to the family of Cheryl Gross.
Lastly, with all that I do for the community and my school I have little time to have a real paying job, but I still manage to fit it into my schedule. I am currently working at Hollister at my local mall. This job has not only made lifetime friendships but is also helping grow my experience in the sales, retail, and customer service field. I love to help an assist as much as possible to make a positive difference in our community, because if we don’t have a leader stand up and get the job done then who will?
