MI by Tressa - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

I am thankful for the opportunity to have met a diverse, driven, and intelligent group of women while attending Michigan Technological University though the Alpha Sigma Tau sorority. As a first year student, I felt isolated being far from home and not knowing anyone. Meeting the ladies of Alpha Sigma Tau has made a huge difference in my college experience.

Taking on leadership positions was always highly encouraged for AST members. Eager to make a difference, I took on many positions. I didn’t know how to be a good leader, I failed. Older members pulled me back up, helped get me going in the right direction. They challenged me, encouraged me to do better. Senior members showed me how staying organized, setting deadlines, taking notes, following through, and listening to others would improve my ability to succeed in these roles.

I am very grateful to all the sisters of Alpha Sigma Tau. They are my home away from home. They are supportive, encouraging, and kind. I would have never guessed how much of an impact being a member of a sorority would be on my life. They taught me how to be a good leader and that is a lesson I will be able to take with me where ever I end up and in any career I have.
