Title: A Different Perspective: My Gateway to Growth by Tremain - March 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Tremain Stephens, a Black man entering my freshman year at Virginia Commonwealth University, and my learning journey has been profoundly shaped by a quote I keep close to heart: "I learn that different perspectives result in different outlooks on certain things." This statement became particularly influential while pursuing my high school education marked by a remarkable experience that altered my view of life and education.
In the final year of my high school, as part of a group project in our English literature class, I found myself partnered with a classmate, Emma. Emma and I, despite sharing the same learning space for years, were wellsprings of polar perspectives. A conservatively brought up white woman contrasting with my upbringing as a Black man in an open-mined household, the dichotomy was evident. Nevertheless, an English project was where our worlds would meet, merge, and expand our learning.
We were tasked with analyzing Harper Lee’s novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird", and presenting our insights to the class. It was a novel that I held in esteem due to its exploration of racial injustice. Expectedly, Emma and I immediately differed in our interpretations of the characters and themes. Where I saw the merits of Atticus Finch as a symbol of moral heroism, Emma underscored his white paternalism. Where I envisioned a narrative concerning racial injustice, she exposed a narrative confined by the white perspective, unable to fully emulate the Black man's experience.
Our perspectives were disjointed, making progress on the assignment difficult. However, as time passed, our discussions got heated but simultaneously more invigorating. As I defended my analysis, I found myself digging deeper beneath the text's surface, challenging my own preconceptions and biases. Emma, in turn, endeavored to explain her perspective, vested in a backdrop of racial privilege and conservative upbringing that, despite being restrictive, still held valid reflections on society's inequities. Our differences in worldview were fueling a deeper comprehension of a work we both loved.
Through our mediation and negotiation of analytical territory, I embraced a profound revelation. I understood that different perspectives do, indeed, shape our outlooks, but they also foster intellectual growth. That project was no longer just an assignment; it was a venue for two young minds to challenge and reshape their respective understanding of literature, race, and society. Our contrasting views had ignited a new curiosity in me—a curiosity that compelled me to examine texts from a broader lens, igniting in me a desire to delve further into the study of English in college.
This experience has been instrumental in defining who I am today—a rising college freshman committed to studying English. Having secured a high school GPA of 3.0 despite the challenges of divergent perspectives, I have proven my resilience and dedication towards learning. And now, harnessing the insights derived from intellectual exchanges with Emma, I intend to conduct my studies passionately and critically. I am confident that my pursuits at Virginia Commonwealth University will be framed by this multifaceted approach.
As an African American man, I recognize the power and the privilege of education. I understand the powerful role it plays in shaping one's perception and ability to initiate change. Through this scholarship, I seek not merely financial assistance but an opportunity to continue my journey of learning and growth. A journey that I once shared with Emma and now hope to expand at university. A journey forged out of the recognition that differences in perspective are not hindrances, but gateways to enlightenment. This is what makes me a strong candidate—my willingness to embrace different perspectives and my commitment to utilize such experiences for intellectual and personal growth.
In essence, my transition from an ordinary high school student to a hopeful scholar at VCU is a testament to the transformative power of education. It's a journey that continues to shape me, and with this scholarship, I am eager to keep learning, growing, and contributing to my community. Thereby, daring to make a mark in the world, not despite but because of our contrasting perspectives—a testament to the enriching power of diversity in learning.
