Knowledge by Torianah - November 2018 Scholarship Essay
In the film, V for Vendetta, Alan Moore says these lines: “Knowledge, like air, is vital to life. Like air, no one should be denied it”. I resonate with this quote for several reasons, and this is why I would choose it as my senior quote. I feel knowledge is vital to living. If you choose not to learn about what is happening around you or what has happened before you, you are not living your best life possible. If you have no knowledge of the life to come, then you may be faced with hardships you do not know how to endure. Learning is the basis of our careers, and therefore, most of our lives. If you are not motivated to learn, how will you ever progress in life? Not to mention, if you grow ignorant, you will spend much of your life missing the amazing things going on around you. I am not saying those without vast knowledge cannot enjoy the beautiful things in life, but there is something about knowing exactly what is happening that makes what you are seeing even more intense and spectacular.
The second part of the quote says something that really strikes within me. Knowledge is vital to life, so why should people be denied it? I come from a home where money does not come easily. We tend to live pay check to pay check. I grew up with my friends having everything I did not. Money has already held me back my entire life, and it seems it is not going to stop anytime soon. It is already hindering my opportunities to seek higher education. We are growing up in this world where if you are not athletic or financially well off, you are left to the dogs when it comes to going to college. It is not fair to the portion of the population that just does not have the means to pay the endless bill of college. There are scholarships to help, but we are teeming with people who wish to attain the knowledge they crave who are still being denied the opportunity because of the home they come from.
In a perfect world, everyone would be able to go to college if they wished it. Unfortunately, we do not live in a fair and equal world. Not everyone can follow their dreams. I just wish money was not the main factor in holding back millions of peoples’ success.
