The New Year's Resolution of Studying by Tony - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

Monday, May 25, 2015, was the day that I achieved one of my college goals as an undergraduate student at Benedictine University. My goal during that time is to enroll in one summer class during that year so I can gain more college credits so I can graduate ahead of schedule. That day was the day of a long summer class journey in 2015. The class that I enrolled in was a Humanities class that focused on a combination of daily events, history, and student viewpoints and opinions on different things that currently have taken place in the world. To be honest, I really did not want to take this class but it was a requirement for my school’s graduation. The first day of class came and I was nervous for my life because of the amount of talking and communication that my professor made the students do. I was not comfortable with talking and I am normally shy when it comes to expressing myself. June 12, 2015 came and I made another goal and that goal was to try to be interactive in my class and pass a class with a letter grade of an A. As my summer class progress over the two months, I am proud to say that I achieved my goals that I made in the summer of 2015. Not only that I learned to communicate with people more and being comfortable talking in public places, as well as enrolling for a class during the summer, I accomplished my goal of receiving an A for the course. With this being said, I was also on the Dean’s list for the summer in recognition for taking the class and earning an A.

When thinking of a resolution, I mostly think of a goal that someone has set out to achieve. When the media started to add New Year to the Resolution then it signals that people in the United States as a society should make goals for the New Year to accomplish. In general, New Year’s Resolution can be the same as having goals for the New Year. Many people have different goals that they want to achieve at the beginning of every New Year. These goals are set to make a person become better individual in all aspects of their personal lives. People can make fitness goals to get in shape for the year. A few individuals might make scholarly goals to achieve the goals that they set out in schools, for example making the Dean’s List. Others might even set goals by trying to be employed to a job or be promoted on a job. There are many different goals that people set out to achieve at the beginning of each New Year and it is very common for students in 2016 to work toward their educational goals.

My New Year’s Resolution of becoming a better student in 2016 is to improve my studying skills. Improving studying skills might be the same as everyone else but, I know when I improve my studying then I will have more success in the classroom. I will earn more A’s and many recognitions to the Dean’s list. When improving my studying skills, I know that I should receive help from most of my professors. Going to their office hours when available, and practicing what my teachers do and using that same practice by myself can make me do better in school. I can also receive peer tutoring and ask different questions on effective ways to studying. I can also spend more time at my school’s library going over class material for my different classes. There are so many ways that I see myself improving to better my studying habits. This is a start and I look forward to continue practicing these skills for years to come. I can honestly say that having good studying skills can prepare me not only just to become a better student in 2016 but, it can prepare me in my career. Improving my studying skills is my New Year’s Resolution of becoming a better undergraduate student at Benedictine University.

Looking back on my success during my summer course in 2015, I did well in that class because I had a good studying method. Every week during the course of the class, I stayed after class for additional help every Thursday so I can get feedback and remarks on what I should get better at in class. I also set a time frame every night that I can go over notes from class each day. I re-read different assignments from the text book so I can be caught up in that class as well. Studying is an essential key in a student career to have a success at school. Hopefully more students like me, will have a New Year’s Resolution by improving studying skills to become a better student in 2016.
