Tonita Walker by Tonita - August 2016 Scholarship Essay
I’d say Language Arts/ English Literature was the class I learned the most in during my high school years. Just in the meaning of the word language explains the importance of the class and the benefits of learning the academic materials. The meaning states that it’s the method of human communication. So in my language arts classes I learned the proper way to speak, write, and how to have a suitable conversation. It is the very reason I am able to write this essay today. Without this class I wouldn’t be able to write correctly, form the appropriate sentences, or even know the difference between a noun or a verb.
Just thinking back, I question what if the department of Education didn’t require this class as one of the core classes to graduate? What if it wasn’t a part of the school’s curriculum? How would we communicate? This makes me have a stronger value for literature. In condition that we didn’t have this teaching, how would we know how to speak to our family and friends? The knowing that we wouldn’t know how to put a simple sentence together to tell our spouse, children, parents and siblings I love you would be heart breaking.
I am more than thankful for my language Arts teachers and all of my other teachers also. They had to care enough to get the right education and training to be able to teach us. It takes a special person to teach and a willing person to learn. You can’t get growth without teaching and a willingness to learn. I’ve learned from this is to never have an I know it all attitude. If you know everything there is no room for growth. Always have a willingness to learn. Learning improves! I’ve also learn to share what I’ve learned with someone else. Growth is helping other grow as well.
