Practice Make Perfect: Especially When There Is No Stress Involved by Tod - May 2016 Scholarship Essay
Practice testing — any form that allows students to test themselves, including using actual or virtual flashcards, doing problems or questions at the end of textbook chapters, or taking practice tests. By testing ones-self, you eliminate much stress involved in the learning process.
You can truly learn from your mistakes. Learning takes time and your complete attention. By using flash cards, you can stop and study the question-answer presented. Study may involve going back to the class notes or text book.
The process under-taken to create the flash cards provides an atmosphere of learning. When the flash cards are made by you, the notes and important facts in the text book are reviewed. This process leads to learning. In addition, your placement of the question-answer on the flash card helps you retain that information.
The study method of practice testing uses three senses. When you create the cards you are using, the hand motion of writing the question and answer, transmits information through your sense of touch. Once written on the card, you can see the question-answer combination. Then when testing yourself, you can read the question-answer. By doing this, you hear the question-answer combination. Three senses used in the practice testing practice allows you to retain the information through thee separate sensory paths.
Personalization of the practice testing practice makes the method comfortable to an individual. Comfort comes through the ability to control the speed of your learning. When tired, you can rest at will. Breaks are controlled by you. A sense of accomplishment is obtained by your sole creator-user-and succeeded achievements.
