Faith by Tionna - August 2022 Scholarship Essay

I have always been placed on a path. It did not require me to think much about what I wanted to do next. In middle school I participated in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. While I did sign up for it myself I did not really know what I was getting into. During those years I had access to many resources, which then exposed me to the Advance College Academy. This program allowed me to graduate high school with my associates degree in social sciences by partnering with a local community college. I thought this was a great opportunity and went for it. Four years later, I graduated with both my degree and my diploma. I applied to colleges and universities not really knowing what I wanted to pursue in life. All I knew was that according to plans set by my family and the people around me, college was the next step. I had considered careers in veterinary science and social work, but nothing ever felt right. I have always felt lost and unsure. Now I am in my first year of college enrolling in classes and researching further on majors that interest me.
The prompt requested that I describe an academic goal for the upcoming school year and my goal is clarity. I want to figure out my life in academia and have confidence in it. I want to have faith in my academic career and not just follow a set path that was picked out for me. I want to feel certain in my academic decisions this year. I have always been set on a prepared path and never had the chance to discover things for myself. My academic career is full of uncertainty, but I feel I am finding myself during this time of exploration filled with resources and possibilities.
