Professor Clyburn by Tionna - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
Learning has always been one of my favorite things. Adding new information to one's knowledge is exhilarating. It is also exciting to be capable of sharing your knowledge with others. I've always loved teaching others. So, in answer to the essay question, if I had to teach a college class, I would choose music theory. The reason: there is more to music than it looks.
Music theory would be a fun class to teach. It was a subject that intrigued me as a child, when I was just starting to learn to play piano. I discovered that there was more to reading music than just lines and dots on a page. There was more to the world of music than I'd imagined possible. Suddenly, it was as though I was able to understand a new language. Since then, I've continued to develop my skill in that area.
Music is more than just playing an instrument; it's a whole world with its own language. When one is able to understand it, he or she can not only play and create music, but fully understand what he or she has played or created. That itself connects a musician to a piece of music. Theory is part of the beauty of connecting with music.
A dream job is more than just an idea of work; it's a reflection of we are. To me, choosing a career can, and should connect with something you love to do. For me, it's music. It's something that connects to the melody in my soul. That's something worth sharing with the world.
