Me, Myself, and My Education by Tina - October 2022 Scholarship Essay

Education gives you unforgettable experiences where you discover parts of yourself that you haven’t found out before. You get the opportunity to make new friends and join clubs/organizations that interest you. Aside from joining clubs, you get to experience independence from your parents and make your own decisions as a young adult. I learned that it is important to work hard, but also live in the moment during college.
I plan to attend my dream graduate school, UT Health at Houston, to become an Epidemiologist. These last two years, I struggled with finding myself as a person. I had to overcome many challenges such as maintaining work, a social life, and school. It wasn’t simple due to the fact that I lacked motivation and energy. The significant amount of hours I worked while maintaining my grades in school took a toll on my mental health. I started eating less and sleeping less than eight hours every night. I self-sabotaged myself to the point where I felt like I wasn’t good enough for anything. The situation made me reflect on my passion and goals for the future. After taking time to do my favorite hobbies and working as a pharmacy technician for two years, I realized that I was passionate about improving my overall health.
During that time of trying to figure out who I am, I started working out to get stronger. I continuously kept my body and heart healthy by lifting weights. I learned to eat certain foods to reach my desired weight. I was also aware of my mindset, so I decided to go to therapy to help with my positivity. I learned that even though life can be difficult, I can make positive changes by participating in activities I truly enjoy. I even searched up information about my desired career and its purpose for helping the world. Later on, I immediately became interested in how to stop the spread of the disease. I hope to shadow epidemiologists in the future, so I can learn and take advice from them.
