Chemistry by Tina - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I were a college professor, I would teach chemistry. Chemistry is a subject I have had a passion for since I first took it in tenth grade. It is a logical, ordered, beautiful science. Parts of chemistry, especially drawing chemical bonds, are an art form. Yet chemistry is science. If you put the correct variables into a chemical equation, you will always get the correct answer. These opposite sides of chemistry, artistic and mathematical, fuse together to create a balance that makes studying chemistry rewarding.
I would love to teach chemistry in college to pass my love of the subject on to students. Chemistry can be taught in several ways. For hands-on learners, I would use models and dioramas to help them connect to chemistry. For students, like myself, who prefer the written word as a learning method, I could use textbooks and sample problems to help them understand the concepts. Being able to adapt my class to suit all my students would make teaching chemistry fulfilling.
However, my biggest reason for teaching chemistry is to inspire my students. Having a professor who is passionate about the subject she teaches can inspire students to pursue more information about the topic. This in turn can inspire students to seek a career they may never have thought about pursuing before taking that class.
Further, as a female chemistry professor, I would hope to inspire my female students to be courageous. Being a female in a male dominated science field is challenging, but so worthwhile. Teaching college chemistry would allow me to be a positive role model to other women dreaming of science based degrees and careers. I would be able to show them their dreams are possible.
In summary, if I were to teach a college class, I would choose chemistry for the positive impact I could have on my students with whom I would share my passion.
