What Leadership means to me by Timothy - May 2024 Scholarship Essay

Leadership is when someone leads a group of people. But, what does it mean to be a good leader? Being a good leader isn’t about good grades or being able to give a speech to a big crowd, being a leader to me, is about being mentally strong, having self-confidence, and being situationally aware. You can take this with a grain of salt because leadership still hasn’t been measured or completely understood but, I’ll try to illustrate what some traits are that good leaders share.

Traits that good leaders share vary from person to person but, first and foremost you need a sense of humor. Good leaders first become a part of the group and as they work more and more with the crew they gain the crew’s respect. Another thing that every leader shares is work-ethic. Without work-ethic you have no chance of gaining the respect of the crew. Someone who is a great example of a leader is my manager Brandon who would work with the crew, help clean up and command respect like no one I have ever seen before, when he walked in the room everyone recognized him as the boss and there were no questions about it.

The last trait that every good leader has in common is the willingness to learn. A good leader is someone who is not afraid to admit when they don’t know something. So, they end up knowing a lot and are in a better position to keep their neutrality through any challenging situation they might face. And by being willing to learn wholeheartedly, you become a trustworthy person and can then enforce that with integrity and honesty.

To sum it all up, Leadership is a learned skill and there are many facets and moving parts. But, as long as you are willing to learn, be honest, have a good work ethic, and are a cool person in general then in my books you are a good leader.
