From Crying on the First Day of School, to Crying on Graduation Day by Tiffany - October 2014 Scholarship Essay

Going to school is not usually a student’s favorite way to spend their time. Let’s face it, kids cry on their first day of kindergarten, and teenagers cry on their first day of the week. The truth is, there is a way to make school more tolerable for students. An ideal classroom where students feel motivated, curious, and comfortable will promote academic success because it will help school feel more bearable for students.

Every person wants to feel important. Students especially, want to feel like they are a significant part of the class and it is important for teachers to make each student involved in the criteria. Not only does being an active part of the class help students remember and understand the information, it also helps them feel comfortable in the classroom setting. Once a student feels comfortable in the class, they are able to interact with the teacher and their peers, making the class seem more tolerable. When a student becomes adapted to the environment, it makes it easier for them to focus on the material.

Students tend to be very competitive people. They love a challenge when it involves doing better than another person. This is why the ranking system has been such a successful aid in education. A classroom where students are challenged to do their best, allows the student to want academic success. If the classroom uses a system to reward students, and gives credit when they do well, it even further motivates them to try harder.

Most students argue that some classes are not involved in what they plan to do in the future. If you make the class relevant to the student, they will see the importance of learning, and strive to do their best. Once relevance is established, students begin becoming curious, and desire to learn more. They will ask questions, pay attention, begin to remember important information, and carry that information with them into the community.

Although students may not always be enthused to come to school, it is possible to stop them from dreading it. Allowing students to interact with their peers, motivating them, and striking curiosity will make a classroom more successful in establishing academic success. If a classroom embraces these aspects, students won't be crying because they are going to school anymore, they will be crying because they graduated.
