Books Can be Fun....... by Tiara - July 2013 Scholarship Essay
Even though books appear boring most of the time, not all books are boring. During my sophomore year in high school, I read a book called A Lesson Before Dying, which was about a man who was wrongly convicted of killing people. Most of the book evolves around his journey to discover that he is not the "hog" that society portrays him to be and that he is actually a man. I liked this book because it was a personal adventure for a man to discover himself, not to accept what others saw him as. Like Jefferson, the wrongly convicted man, each one of us has to have a journey to find ourselves after we have graduated from high school and took flight from our parent's homes. Even though Jefferson's case was a lot more serious, his journey to self-identity reflects everyone else's. This book also intrigued me on a personal level, because through middle school to adulthood, things like peer pressure and media tend to alter everyone's individuality. This recurring theme actually took place in my life, but it took some learning and regrouping for me to discover my more respectable habits and rekindle the person that my parents instilled in me. Hopefully, with that learning, I will then be able to leave my parent's arms, become an important mark in society, and become a role model for other kids who have lost themselves along the way.
