How I overcame Biology by Tiana - April 2019 Scholarship Essay
It was August 2018, when I received my schedule for the Fall Semester. Unfortunately, the first class listed underneath Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8am was Biology. I instantly became nervous and anxious to drop the class. It was my 2nd time taking Biology because I failed it in 12th grade when I was dual enrolled student taking college classes. I can admit, it was my fault that I failed the class because I never gave the class my all. I had a negative attitude all semester because I disliked anything pertaining to science. It wasn't that science was boring; it was just a lot of material to comprehend and understand. However though, it was always ironic to me that in 9th grade I loved Biology but once it advanced to a college level, I started to hate it. Nonetheless, in order to obtain my Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice; I was required to take at least one science which was Biology. So instead of complaining as usual, I put my feelings aside and made a goal to finish out strong!
The first couple weeks was a breeze. We learned about the proper procedures to conducting an experiment and DNA Replication. It didn't get hard until we started learning about The Nervous System and Evolution. But I never let it discourage me; instead I started getting closer with my classmates and formed study groups after class. It was very effective until our schedules suddenly became very busy with various extra curricular activities; therefore we stopped meeting and fended for ourselves. Personally, I was very disappointed this happened because I finally was starting to understand biology! I felt confident when completing the homework and even when reading the textbook. I couldn't let this stop me from achieving the grade I wanted though so I went looking for an alternative.
It was a early Tuesday morning when I was sitting in my counselor's office expressing my concerns about Biology. I explained to him that I was having trouble staying on track and I needed to pass Biology with at least a C because I refused to take it for a third time. He heard me out and I directed me to a Tutoring Program the university offered. I thanked him and went about my day. Later on that night, I visited the tutoring website and came across a huge list of tutors for Biology. I felt sane, knowing that there was hope in passing biology. I selected Khalil Cook as my tutor and we met with each other the next morning. His tutoring style was amazing! He carefully explained each subject, made references to real life and even played games to test my memory. I still thank him to this day for being patient and motivating me on a daily.
As it got closer to midterms, the tutoring program came to an end. I was kind of sad because I felt alone again but Khalil ensured that I would ace it without a doubt because I was more than prepared and all I had to do was keep studying. I made it apart of my daily routine after lunch to study for at least 45 minutes up until October 3rd, the date of the midterm. October 3rd came and I passed the midterm with a B+. I was more than proud of myself! I finished the class with a C and I was finally done with science for the rest of my college career.
