What is the most important lesson that you have learned this year and how will it impact you moving forward? by Threvia - July 2024 Scholarship Essay
The most important lesson I've learned this year is the importance of accountability. Understanding the importance of accountability helps me understand not only taking responsibility for what I did, but also the lesson that I learned. It’s not always about what you did but more so about how you did it and the principle behind your intentions.
Accountability encourages us to follow through our commitments and it also helps us develop a strong sense of responsibility. For example, I’m a student athlete therefore I have to hold myself accountable by maintaining my grades so that I can continue to play volleyball. Accountability will foster a self-discipline mindset meaning I won’t have a lot of time to talk and hang out with my friends but instead I’ll have to study or go over my notes for a test. Even though there will be times when I fail a test or don’t get the best grade on an assignment that doesn’t mean I can be disappointed in myself, that just gives me space to grow and learn from my mistakes.
Accountability also plays a crucial part in relationships and I love to spend time with my friends and family. Being accountable not only shows my interactions with others but also my trustworthiness and reliability when it comes to spending time with others. For instance, when I commit to spending quality time with friends and family it’s my responsibility to hold myself accountable and build a foundation of trust and mutual respect in my relationships.
Overall I hope that understanding accountability will impact my personal and professional relationships but also my self-discipline. As I move forward and go on to college, understanding accountability will allow me to achieve my goals, have a positive effect in my community, and also build trust in a personal and professional environment. Our actions impact us and those around us and understanding that accountability is not only about taking ownership of our actions it is also about acceptance and learning from our mistakes while growing from them.
