My Bio by Tessa - August 2016 Scholarship Essay

Just like one book can make you love reading, one class can make you love learning. It wasn’t until I walked into my first freshman honors biology class at my new school that I had real urge to learn. I had always been a good student, did my homework on time, studied enough in advance, and participated, but a true will to learn is something different. I was always told that you had to get through the boring basic stuff to be able to study what you truly want.

As I sat down in one of the squeaky desks in the biology room, I felt at home. I was lost in my thoughts until there was a loud bang out of nowhere, as I slowly made my way to the present there was a giant biology book staring back at me. I was immediately eager to open it up and start reading the first page, which was unsurprisingly about the different hierarchies of life, starting with the ecosystem all the way down to the cell and even the molecule. My eyes couldn’t help but linger in the tiny picture of a cell. I had looked though my dad’s old microscope innumerable times but never had I seen these so called organelles. I couldn’t wait to learn more about it.

My initial excitement did not die down like it usually does. It has stayed with me and intrigued me to this day. Slowly I started to find more enjoyment in other subjects such as math and chemistry and school became more than a place to learn seemingly endless lists of vocab and historical events. At the end of freshman year we moved away to the Midwest and nothing can overcome the joy I felt that when I found out that at my new school I was able to take two more years of biology because of their different curriculum. Not only do I take biology but at this school I could also join their Science Olympiad team, write and extended essay in the field of biology, and find my passion for helping and teaching others in the field of science.

For some people the only thing they tend to remember from their biology is that: “the mitochondria is the power house of the cell” but there is truly so much more to it, I gained from it a life time of interest not only in biology but also in school and learning.
