What a Freshman Should Do by Tess - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

One piece of advice I would give an incoming freshman in high school is to get involved with as many different clubs and sports as they can. I was in different clubs and sports in high school and I gained so much from them in terms of life experiences.

High school is an ideal time to experience different activities that may help one determine in what they are interested. Most high schools offer a multitude of clubs that can expose someone to activities they may not be aware of and they may really enjoy. I discovered some of my favorite pastimes from participating in high school clubs and sports. I would have never known that I was interested in them if I hadn’t joined.

Extra curricular activities in high school can introduce someone to lifelong friends. They allow a person to meet other people who share common interests and hobbies. I met some of my best friends that I know I will cherish forever from the sports and clubs in which I participated in high school.

Active participation and success in clubs and sports look favorable on college, job and scholarship applications. As a freshman in high school, college, future jobs and applying for scholarships seem so far away but they will “be here” before a person may think. Colleges and employers are looking for people who not only find success with the academic schoolwork but also find success in clubs and sports that lead to making one a more well-rounded person. When a person starts out their freshman year participating in sports and clubs this can help build applications and resumes and make someone a better candidate for college scholarships and admittance.

Clubs and sports can teach you many different life skills as well. You can learn leadership skills and teamwork. You can learn how to face adversity and how to compete. You can learn victory as well as defeat. Clubs and sports can teach you to follow through with responsibilities, complete tasks and assignments and persevere through adversity when it arises.
