The Heart of a Teacher by Terrell - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
Jada Pinkett Smith once said, “my belief is that communication is the best way to create strong relationship.” Communication is key in today’s society. Sometimes things are done without communication, but it doesn’t end up the right way. The world that harbors us is full of hatred that tears us all apart. This hatred is what tears us apart and makes us inhumane.
There are true benefits of communicating. Some are mental, and some are even physical. If I was an instructor I would teach Communication Applications. Some would call it speech; this class isn’t about learning to speak in front of a crowd. It’s about learning to become have a voice no matter who you are. As a teacher I would make sure every one of my students had a solid foundation. Children and adults alike have lost their ways. They lack the ability to talk to one another. This sudden decline in this skill is due to technology. A scientist named Albert Einstein said “technology has exceeded our humanity.” Einstein was right about many things. Today we could see a drowning man near death and a bystander will video tape the situation in the last minutes of their life instead of trying to be useful and do what is needed to help the drowning man. This is not right at all. My students would learn to act as people and not judge anyone because of their skin color. I would teach them to forgive each person no matter what they have done to them. If the people in this country were taught to love and communicate, that would be one less life lost. That would be one more man or woman waking up to greet their child, as they wake up and prepare for a hectic day of school. As a person, we care for ourselves more than others. It’s human nature. Communicating alleviates selfishness because you have a chance to understand both sides. The benefit is that you’re able to create a strong relationship with people.
I personally have benefited in many aspects of my life, whether it being in real life or on the court when I’m playing basketball. When playing basketball, I have no choice but to communicate in order to win the game. As an instructor I would make it my duty to integrate life lessons into my student’s curriculum. Today we see students lack these lessons. One step at a time, I would help them to reach their full potential, not only in school but out in the real world as well.
