Think for Yourself by Teresa - July 2013 Scholarship Essay
One of the greatest things you will ever learn in school is the importance of thinking for yourself. In George Orwell's 1984 we learn what the world would be like if we did not have the power to make decisions for ourselves and lost complete control of our lives. I found this to be the most important piece of literature I ever had to read in school because of this valuable lesson. In a world where the youth of our country is becoming obsessed with technology and what they see on television, it is a miracle that there are books such as 1984 to teach the masses to not get distracted by consumerism and to focus on real issues regarding our government, and how much power it has. Out of all the books I read in school, 1984 seemed to have the largest affect on my peers. It was amazing to see everyone so interested in what we were learning and genuinely concerned about what was going on in the world. Because of the everlasting affect I witnessed it have on myself, and my peers, I definitely feel that 1984 was the best book I was assigned to read for school. Any book that can change how you view the world and help you develop into a young adult is a book that should be considered one of the best you will ever have to read.
