Finding Balance in the Hustle by Terence - July 2024 Scholarship Essay

As I sat alone in my room, thoughts swirled around me: “Is it enough?”, “Shouldn’t I be doing something more productive?”, “Why am I not doing more?”. These questions plagued my mind, especially in a world that increasingly glorifies the grind.

Since the pandemic, society has adopted a relentless "hustle" mentality. Quarantine pushed many of us to be creative—whether by becoming TikTok content creators or embracing remote work. While this drive can inspire innovation and motivate progress, it can also feel overwhelming, both mentally and physically.

One pivotal moment came during a session with my therapist. She asked, “With all the self-development you’re pursuing, doesn’t it feel overwhelming? Have you paused to acknowledge what you’ve already accomplished?” Her words struck a chord. I realized the importance of taking a step back to appreciate my journey. Sometimes we get too caught up in our life where we miss the little things that make us who we are.

This year, I learned that it’s essential to celebrate small victories. Each achievement, no matter how minor, contributes to my growth and helps me stay motivated. Moving forward, I will prioritize self-reflection and gratitude, allowing myself the grace to rest and recognize my progress. In doing so, I’ll transform the hustle into a more balanced pursuit of my goals.
