Positive change in my school by Tekirah - September 2023 Scholarship Essay

I have attended my private Christian school for the last 15 years of my life. One thing I have come to realize is that as young Christians, we have not been showing respect, kindness, or love to each other. Due to our private and privileged environment, some have taken an “I am better than others” type of attitude, which is not how we should act. I am certain that my school’s students are not the only ones with problems in acceptance, showing kindness, or treating others right; however, as a Christian, I take my job in showing love to others very seriously. In my church, we are taught that God’s will for us on Earth is to help and serve others. As senior class president, I have continued my job in service.

If I had the authority to make a positive change in my school, I would change the divided environment to which we have grown accustomed. Instead of being one joined class, there are individual cliques and groups, which constantly exclude some people. In my new role as senior class president, I have made it my goal to help create and leave behind a better environment for future and current students at my school. I have already started working with my honor society group at school for tutoring and mentoring sessions amongst upperclassmen and elementary and middle schoolers. This will allow the younger students at our school to know that when they get older, there will be people there ready to help and care for them.

I am a person who cares for people and their well-being. In the place where we are sent to learn and grow, it would be hard to do that if we aren't all working together, supportive of each other, and genuinely care for others. So if I had the authority to change my school in a positive way, I would simply choose to change the overall environment into one that is positive, encouraging, and kind.
