Going Down the Wrong Path by Teal - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

If you were to look at all of my school records, clear back to first grade until now, you would see a trend that is common among every test score ever recorded in my behalf. I am not proficient in math or science, but I excel in reading, writing, and history skills. It is clear to see that while I may come up short in terms of logical thinking, I do okay in regards to memorization or creativity. Many teachers, and tutors, have attempted to help me improve in these categories, but my test scores have never deviated from the original report.

I would not say that this is a unique characteristic about myself, most of my friends and acquaintances would say that, they too, are dismal at math and science. However, I am currently a Biology major at my university, and that is what some would call strange. For somebody who it is required of to spend hours on end at the math lab in order to pass the most basic class, I am the first to admit that my degree choice is abnormal. I struggle constantly with this decision to take the hard road, but I am comforted to know that it is not the wrong path for me.

My greatest academic success is overcoming the belief that I could not do what I wanted to do with my life simply because I was not naturally talented at it. I love science, and I strive hard every day as a university student to overcome that tendency to doubt my abilities. I want to be a scientist and so I will be a scientist. The lesson I am repeatedly learning is that you can do anything you put your mind to, all it takes is a lot of hard work and time.
