My Future Major by Teague - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

What I am going to major in has been a difficult question I’ve had for a long time. During my sophomore year, I set my heart on the thought that I would become a surgeon. After I got back surgery, I asked my surgeon, Dr. Heflin, “what would be the best thing to major in or work towards when I am in college?” Dr. Heflin, who was on the medical board for accepting college students into medical school, said that the medical field is extremely competitive. With how competitive it is, he told me that board members like to see variety. They would rather see someone majoring in areas with mathematics or business than just taking the boring pre-med route which doesn’t show much personality.
consequently, from the information Dr. Heflin gave me, I have planned on majoring in one of two different areas. The first, and more likely, major I plan on is mathematics and the second is psychology.
I find myself very interested in mathematics. Throughout Junior High and high school, I felt that math was my strongest subject. That being said, I think majoring in math would give me the best chance at success, while also teaching me valuable lessons about problem solving. My second option I would choose to major in is psychology. I feel majoring in psychology is definitely a step closer to the medical world compared to math. Additionally, I think that could help me not only get to know more about the medical world, but also give me added benefits such as learning about how humans think and operate, which is a valuable skill needed as a physician.
