Intentionality by Taylor - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
Quickly following the busy Christmas-time of year is New Years. New Years brings traditions, parties, midnight kisses, but most of all, New Years brings resolutions for the upcoming year. Thousands of people set goals they wish to accomplish within the coming 365 days. While many of said goals fall through, still a few are achieved. This year my New Years resolution is to be intentional in the time I spend with God. This resolution will not only help me improve as a student, but it will also help me improve as a leader.
Being intentional is something our society seems to lack in the 21st century. While everyone is consumed in his phone, a whole world of opportunities pass him by. In order to be intentional in my time spent with our Holy Father, I will need to set time apart from everyday. In this time I set apart, I will worship Him, pray to Him, and study Him through His Word. By doing these things, not only will my soul find rest, but I will be well-educated and well-prepared to love on the world around me.
Spending time with God will greatly improve my work as a student. Not only will this time prepare me to love others the way the Lord does, but it will also help me to learn beneficial skills such as time management. Time management is extremely crucial to a student's success. Learning how to manage one's time will lead to intentional periods of time being set aside for each goal that one wishes to accomplish. In school, that may look like managing one's time in order to be able to study in advance for an exam. Or making time for a tutor or study group when he needs help. Along with time management, being intentional with my time spent in the Lord daily will teach me many things that will improve my overall performance as a student.
Aside from aiding in my school work, my intention to spend time in the Lord everyday throughout 2016 will improve my abilities as a leader. Without leaders, our world would be a chaotic fiasco full of bitterness and disagreements. Leaders are the glue who are able to compromise and accomplish goals for the greater good. I have always possessed this gift of leadership. By being intentional with my time and studies with God, I will learn skills such as patience, respect, and grace which will improve my leadership. I intend to use my gift from God of leadership to lead students to Christ someday. As for now, I intend to continue to be a strong leader in my school, in my community, and in my home as a witness to Christ's love and compassion. As I learn more by my intentionality, I will be able to lead and teachers others as well.
All in all, while many people set goals that will fail before the end of January, I intend to be more conscious and dedicated to the time I spend with our Savior daily. And, by doing this, I will become a better student and a better leader.
